An Appeal from Sudan To: Hague Appeal for Peace 1999:
On behalf of the children, youth, women and the people of the Sudan, we scream loudly
requesting your urgent assistance to put an end to the civil war in Southern and Eastern
Sudan, as well as the war in Nuba Mountains.
The Khartoum's regime, controlled by the National Islamic Front (NIF) has precluded the
peace agreement to stop the civil war which started in 1995. The implementation of this
agreement has been demanded by the military force in the beginning of 1989 and approved by
the representatives of the Army, the Police and all the Political Parties, except the NIF,
The trade Unions and the Sudanese Women's Union under the supervision of the
"Sovereign Council" in Sudan.
When the peace agreement was finalized and was about to be signed, the NIF perpetrated a
military coup, and toppled the democratically elected government in June 1989. Soon after
seizing power, the NIF regime waged the civil war, not only in the Southern of Sudan, but
also in Nuba Mountains and Eastern Sudan under the pretext of the "Islamic Holly
war", despite the fact that Sudan is a multi-ethnic, multi cultural and religious
country.
Furthermore, the Khartoum's regime has prevented food and Humanitarian aid from reaching
the areas in need in the war zones. Many have been killed in this war, including children,
youth, and women. This war, in respect of which millions of dollars are spent daily, led
to famine and destruction of villages and towns, and consequently, hospitals and schools.
On the other hand, this war polluted the environment and water.
The civil war in Sudan led to dramatic in the internally displaced and migrants to other
countries. As a result, the number of the Sudanese refugees reached a record level of
seven millions; most of them are children, women, intellectuals, academics, experts and
politicians.
The Khartoum's regime has set up camps in the Northern Sudan to militarily train student,
youth, women and civil servants. The regime closed down universities for long periods and
instead of universities dean, the commander in chief has been appointed to hand over
student's certificates to enable him to send student forcibly to war zones. To achieve the
same purpose, the security forces have been raiding streets and public transport for
youth.
Moreover, and after dissolving all political parties, the NIF regime has been arresting,
detaining and torturing all its political opponents in what is known as the " NIF
Ghost houses" Due to the appalling human rights record in Sudan, the NIF regime has
been condemned by the UN General Assembly and the UN High Commission for Human Rights, in
Geneva. As a result, The Court for War Criminals in Rome accepted the complaints raised by
the National Democratic Alliance in respect of the NIF regime.
Therefore, we kindly request all participants in this appeal for peace to support the
people of Sudan to get rid of the tyrannical regime, by raising the petitions demanding
the NIF regime to stop the war once and for ever, as well as a petition demanding the
Court for War Criminals to put General Omer Al-Bashir, president of the republic and Dr.
Hassan El-Turabi, the mastermind of the regime to an immediate trail, as war criminals.
Long live the noble struggle of the Sudanese people for Democracy, peace and civility,
Thanks to all peace supporters in the world, and Special thanks to all participants in the
Hague Appeal for Peace, 1999.
